Strengths-based support is a collaborative, positive approach that helps uncover your strengths and manage your challenges.

Our goal is to support you to adapt your life to better fit your neurology

As each person is unique, a variety of supportive tools may be employed to create a bespoke program that works for you.  

We are neurodivergent affirmative, trans, and lgbtq+ inclusive.

We use an online platform for sessions and are sensory-sensitive.

We want you to feel as completely at ease as possible during our time together, so whether you would like to wear sunglasses to our session, have dimmed lights, camera off, or communicate via text we are ready and willing to accommodate your needs.

Neurodiverse Affirmative Training

Interested in learning more about the neurodiverse paradigm and how to support neurodivergent people respectfully?

There has been a recent explosion in research from autistic adults and allies, blowing a fresh wind through the halls of academia. The growing movement of neurodiversity firmly centers lived experience at its core. Finally, the human rights of people with disabilities are no longer an optional extra, but an immutable fact.

For too long the maxim "nothing about us, without us" has not been applied to autistic people. Research has been focused more on "normalisation", and "cure", than on the actual needs of autistic people as defined by themselves.

Over the past several years, autistic researchers and self-advocates, along with those committed to participatory research have laboured tirelessly to illuminate the true nature of autism, for the benefit of both autistic and neurotypical peoples to engage, appreciate, understand and learn.

Research Highlights

The landmark double-empathy problem, conceptualised by researcher Damian Milton, provides a much more nuanced appreciation of communication difficulties between autistic and non-autistic people than previous pre-eminent theories.

Monotropism, a unified theory of autism developed by Dinah Murray, places the autistic strength of hyperfocus at its core, and is an essential understanding for thoughtful practitioners to grasp.

From Research into Practice

On a practical level, this research has just begun to trickle into practice in western countries. Research generally states it takes around 17 years for just 14% of new scientific discoveries to enter clinical practice.

We at Thriving Autistic want to support practitioners to be at the forefront of this new model of respectful practice.

This training aims to equip practitioners with the fundamental paradigm shift needed to leave behind outdated assumptions, to appreciate and embrace neurodiversity more generally, and to gain practical understanding of how neurodivergent strengths can be harnessed, along with strategies for a respectful model of affirmative practice.
